Fanchon, Jeff. Jeff Fanchon was created by Hugh Pendexter (Bureau of Abnormal Litigation, Tiberius Smith) and appeared in eight stories in Short Stories in 1916 and 1917, beginning with “The Bride and the Bird Cage” (Short Stories, Sept. 1916).
Jefferson Fanchon is a Great Detective, modeled on Sherlock Holmes, who is known as the “Inquirer.” Although he wants nothing more than to marry his sweetheart and retire to the woods of Maine, he reluctantly carries out a prolonged duel with the Moriarty-like Henri Bouchard. One of Fanchon’s ancestors was Native American, and the conflict between “Indian blood" and whiteness is prominent in the Fanchon stories.
