Evans, Dug. Dug Evans was created by Gene Van and appeared in three stories in Short Stories from 1943 to 1945, beginning with “Dead Man’s Trail” (Short Stories, Dec. 25, 1943).
Dug Evans and his sidekick Smoky Smith are a pair of wandering cowboys who are at various times ranch hands and detectives. “Dug Evans was a short chunky man with a round face, pug nose, and blue eyes. He was dressed in overalls, a white shirt, worn high-heeled boots and a sombrero.” Smoky Smith is a “tall, lean young man, with a devil-may-care expression in his gray eyes, and a half smile on his wide lips.”
