Egyptian Clerk. The Egyptian Clerk was created by the Egyptian creators Alexandre Saroukhan and Muhammad El-Tab’i and appeared in a number of cartoons and movies from 1932 to at least 1949.

Il-Masri Afandi, the “Egyptian Clerk,” is a partially-Westernized bureaucrat who wears both large glasses and a tarbush and is a kind of Egyptian Everyman. He gets into any number of zany and wacky shenanigans, both through his own conceit and foolishness and through his innocent goodwill, and many of his adventures are metaphorically or overtly political, such as his coronation of King Faruq.
