Ebony. Ebony was created by the Spanish author Salvador de Madariaga and appeared in The Sacred Giraffe (1925).
In the seventieth century the African island of Ebony is the most advanced society on Earth, although its technology is at the same level as Europe circa 1925. Europe sank into the sea in the 25th century and is seen as a mythical place, and the white race was exterminated by blacks in the 20th century. Ebony is a matriarchal society in which modern sex roles are reversed. Much of Ebony’s culture is based on traditional African culture, but taboos have rotated toward music and food, and fire has become sacred in the vein of the Zoroastrians.
