Durrant, Jack. Jack Durrant was created by Alfred Edgar (Napoleon Berg, Iron Hagan, Martin Holt, Octavius Kay, Jack Keen, Phantom of Cursitor Fields, Professor Powerby) and appeared in the story serial “The River Pirate” (The Modern Boy, Nov-Dec 1929).
Jack Durrant is a plucky young English lad who is fresh from school. He intends to rebuild his family’s fortunes, by making the Durrant fleet of tugboats the most powerful on the Thames. The only boat left is the Mosquito, but that’s enough for Durrant to ultimately defeat Barney Bullman and the Bullman Union Tug Company, the river pirate who ruined the Durrant family business. Durrant is aided by the Cockney lad Dodger Finch, the “water-rat.”
