Durand. Durand was created by Duane Hopkins and appeared in three stories in Short Stories in 1934, beginning with “Durand Takes the River Division” (Short Stories, Apr 25, 1934).
Durand is a railway detective. “Durand was the system’s trouble-shooter. Legend had it that wherever Durand the trouble-shooter went, trouble was sure to get shot—in the neck. He had not title but that of plain ‘Special Agent’, and his private office was the company’s whole network of rails from the Atlantic to the Mississippi. Durand was good; he always cleaned up, so gossip ran.” He is a “skinny little man with a derby resting mostly on his ears,” and although his manner is mild, his words are “cool, quick, sharp, belying his henpecked appearance.”
