Dumphry. Dumphry was created by “Barry Pain,” the pseudonym of Eric Odell (Constantine Dix, Arthur Lamb, Problem Club), and appeared in sixteen short stories which were collected in Dumphry (1927).
Ernest Dumphrey is an old, rather overweight man living in a suburb of London who uses his average intelligence to try to earn money and negotiate the treacherous shoals of life, some of which involve crime. He usually succeeds.
