Donovan, Dick. Dick Donovan was created by “Dick Donovan,” the pseudonym of James Edward Preston Muddock (Fabian Field), and appeared in hundreds of stories in story papers and magazines from 1888 to 1914, beginning with The Man Hunter: Stories from the Note-Book of a Detective.
Dick Donovan is a private detective in Glasgow. He begins as a hard-boiled street policeman, although he takes pay from private citizens to investigate various cases. He is dogged rather than brilliant, and very strong, both qualities which help him in dealing with the wide variety of criminals he handles, including ordinary murderers, female sharpers, murderesses, criminal gang conspiracies, American female swindlers, and counterfeiters, as well as witchcraft, Yellow Perils, and sinister secret societies.
