Doe, John (II). John Doe (II) was created by Norman A. Daniels (The Black Bat (II), Scott Cameron, Candid Camera Kid, Dan Clark, Crimson Mask, Dynamite Dolan, Stephen Duane, The Eagle (III), Masked Detective, Guy Peyton, Renouf, Skipper, Val Stewart) and appeared in a number of stories in Exciting Detective, beginning with “John Doe–Murderer” (Exciting Detective, Spring 1942).

John Doe (II) is a Wanted Man. Doe has a problem: he has no memory. He’s in the city of Stafford, but he doesn’t know how he got there, and as he soon discovers he is wanted for a murder that he didn’t commit. He discovers that he has an array of skills as a safecracker, and as becomes quickly clear he’s hard-boiled, but he doesn’t know anything else about himself. Eventually his memory returns and he remembers that he is Dr. Peter Dawson and succeeds in clearing his name. Doe is “about twenty-eight, rugged-looking except for a slight pallor; tall-pleasant-faced and well-dressed.”
