The Dean. The Dean was created by Merle Constiner (Luther McGavock) and appeared in nineteen stories in Dime Detective from 1940 to 1945, beginning with “Strangler’s Kill” (Dime Detective, Aug. 1940).
The Dean is a Con Man. Dean Wardlow Rock, known to his friends as “The Dean,” is a fortune teller, con man, and (when necessary) amateur detective who works out of a rooming house in the slums of New York City. The focus of The Dean and his friend and accomplice Benton “Ben” Matthews is to make money by fleecing the innocent, but sometimes the innocent are in danger, and The Dean can’t resist helping them. The Dean seems harmless, but is a hard, clever man with an impressive depth of knowledge in a range of subjects. Several of the stories verge on the fantastic.
