Dawson, Bob. Bob Dawson was created by “Detective Inspector Coles,” the pseudonym of Ernst Semphill, and appeared in twenty-one stories in Marvel and Boys’ Friend Library, from 1908 to 1909, beginning with “The Boy Detectives’ First Case” (Marvel #154, Jan. 9, 1907).
Detective Inspector Coles discovers that Bob Dawson and Harry Fairfax both have the qualities that would make them successful as detectives, and hires them to work for Scotland Yard. Bob Dawson is a large boy with a clever mind, and his foster brother Harry Fairfax is a keen, smaller boy. Together they solve cases for Scotland Yard and then begin working as reporters for The Trumpeter. They take rooms together in Bloomsbury, hire Mrs. Dawson, Bob’s mother, as a housekeeper, and adopt Sneezer, a faithful mongrel.
