Dawe, Archer. Archer Dawe was created by J.S. Fletcher (Turco Bullworthy, Ronald Camberwell, Paul Campenhaye, Sergeant Charlesworth, Richard Goulburn, Inspector Skarratt) and appeared in eight short stories which were collected in The Adventures of Archer Dawe (Sleuth-Hound) (1909).
Archer Dawe is a squat sixty-year-old man, always dressed in black and always wearing a high-crowned, wide-brimmed silk hat. He is an amateur detective who took up crime-solving when he retired and proved good at it, even inventing his own system for catching crooks. He works closely with Scotland Yard and is self-educated in criminology. He has a study full of the gruesome mementos of famous crimes. He is skilled at both tracking and disguising himself as a member of the upper classes. He is quiet and reserved, with a mask-like face and cold, burning, eyes. He is cold-blooded and deliberate in his actions.
