Daring & Co. Daring & Co. was created by H.T.E. Mansfield (P.C. John Dare, Doctor Dread, Polly Smith) and appeared in a number of stories in Butterfly in 1912 and 1913, beginning with Butterfly #389 (Feb. 28, 1912).

Daring & Co. consists of P.C. John Dare and Polly Smith, who is left an inheritance of £1,500 and uses it to form Daring & Co. Detective Agency, located in London. Dare and Smith are successful together, but Smith acquires a Loving Enemy, the Lupin Max Matmaddox, and Smith and Matmaddox marry and Matmaddox reforms and replaces Dare as head of the agency.
