Dare, Jimmy. Jimmy Dare was created by John Boyd Clarke and appeared in “A Knight of the Ranges” (Ace-High Magazine, Mar. 15, 1923) and “A Prince of the Panhandle” (Ace-High Magazine, May 15, 1924).
Jimmy Dare is the trail boss (at “eighty per”) of the Cross-O Syndicate Ranches, and in that role is forced to manhandle evil men, evil cattle, and evil forces of nature. He is “tall, lean and desert-scoured; his face grained quite like the hardest of woods, with an expression as grim as that of a medicine mask.” He “has the unconscious gravity and general immobility of man who acts when the moment is ripe.”
