Dankichi. Dankichi was created by the Japanese creator Shimada Keizô and appeared in emonogatari (a form of comic strip), novels, and movies from 1933 to 1940, beginning with the comic strip “Bôken Dankichi” (Shônen Kurabu, 1933).

Dankichi is a young Japanese boy who is out fishing one day when he falls asleep. His boat drifts out to sea, and when he wakes up his boat has reached the South Seas island of Banjintô, or “Savage Island,” which is inhabited by cannibalistic natives and an abundance of wildlife, including lions, elephants, and giraffes. Dankichi has a variety of adventures on Savage Island and with the help of the clever mouse Karikô eventually becomes king of the island, “civilizing” its cannibal natives and defending them from the greedy, evil, quite shockingly ugly White Peril Europeans.
