Cunningham, Laird. Laird Cunningham was created by “Hal Clement,” the pseudonym of Harry C. Stubbs, and appeared in four stories from 1945 to 1987, beginning with “Uncommon Sense” (Astounding, Sept. 1945); the stories were collected in Intuit (1987).

In the future, in the same universe as some of Clement’s other novels, Laird Cunningham is an interstellar explorer. He is continually presented with problems, from being stranded on an airless planet by his faithless shipmates to discovering the chemical source of the ecology of a sunless world, and is forced to solve them.
