Culver, Dean. Dean Culver was created by William E. Barrett (Dugan (I), Iron Ace, Needle Mike) and appeared in eleven stories in Strange Detective Stories and Dime Detective from 1933 to 1939, beginning with “Dead Man’s Choice” (Strange Detective Stories, Nov. 1933). Dean Culver is a two-fisted, hard-boiled newspaper columnist, the “Blue Barrel,” who writes about and fights the city’s underworld. To better do his job, he doubles as a croupier at the Twin Moons casino, a gambling joint frequented by the city’s criminals.
