Crewe (I). Crewe (I) was created by John Reay Watson and Arthur J. Rees (David Colwyn, Colwin Grey, Inspector Luckcraft) and appeared in Hampstead Mystery (1916) and Mystery of the Downs (1918). Crewe (I) is a Great Detective. He is wealthy and gives away more of his money than he earns in fees. He originally took up detection to drive away boredom; he could have been a top chess player but abandoned it. He has offices in Holborn and an expensive apartment on Jermyn Street in London. He is “grave, self-contained, and inscrutable.” He is assisted by “Joe,” a London street apache.
