Costello, Kitty. Kitty Costello was created by Edith Sessions Tupper (Girl Reporters) and appeared in six stories in Snappy Stories in 1914 and 1915, beginning with “The Affair of the Black Diamond Bracelet” (Snappy Stories, Aug. 1914).

Kitty Costello is a vivacious young woman, the orphaned descendant of “Irish kings and Spanish grandees,” who forsakes a comfortable governess position in Ireland to travel to New York and live with her grand-aunt. Unfortunately, said woman is “ancient and stingy” and gives Costello only enough—barely—to live on, forcing Costello to find a job, quickly. She takes a job as a companion to an upper-class woman, and is living in her house when the woman is murdered. Costello uses her powers of observation and a careful nature to solve that crime, and then goes on to solve others. Although she will faint after matters are resolved, she is firm and cool under pressure.
