Churkin, Vaska. Vasilii Churkin (?-1880) was a Moscow factory worker who became a notorious horse thief, extortionist, and bandit chief who operated in the countryside near Moscow and provinces around Moscow in the late 1870s. He was captured and sent to Siberia, but escaped and resumed outlawry before being killed. In 1915 Churkin was the hero of the Russian film Razboinik Vaska Churkin.
The fictional Churkin is portrayed in a more sentimental manner, as a Gentleman Bandit, than the historical Churkin actually was.
