Chief. Chief was created by George Cory Franklin and appeared in fourteen stories in Street & Smith’s Western Story Magazine from 1937 to 1942, beginning with “Chief Plays the Game” (Street & Smith’s Western Story Magazine, Apr 10, 1937). Chief is a horse of high human intelligence who usually leads a mule train for his human, Al, but when circumstances call for it Chief saves Al from shootists and mischievous sheep. Al also solves crimes.
