Chase, Helen. Helen Chase was created by Sage Miles and appeared in the story serial “The Diamond Cargo” (Argosy, Dec. 1901-Aug. 1902).

Helen Chase, Edith Eyrick, and various men friends are on a yachting expedition to the coast of Brazil when they decide to go ashore on their own. They are captured by the local police and jailed, and then captured again by a group of native women who adopt Chase as their high priestess and goddess. They have to put up with attacks by their hereditary enemies, a race of black men, while the men in Chase’s party, who have broken out of jail, encounter vampiric, stun-gas-emitting spiders, strangler monkeys, and the blind, albino descendants of a Lost Race subterranean Roman colony. Eventually both parties are reunited and return home.
