Chaka. Chaka (c. 1787-1828) united the various Zulu groups into one nation and forged their warriors into a widely feared military. In 1925 he was the subject of the Mosotho author Thomas Mofolo’s novel Chaka, which portrays the life of “the black Napoleon” as a tragic epic in which Chaka, who is similar in many ways to Milton’s Satan, succumbs to evil and sorcerously sells his soul for power.
