CCC. The CCC was created by “Seth Ranger,” the Street & Smith pseudonym used in this case by Frank Richardson Pierce (Frying Pan Austin, Contact & Mile High, Greaseball Donovan, Hardrock, No-Shirt McGee, Flapjack Meehan, Panhandle Pete, Dad Simms, Tip, Rusty Wade), and appeared in fourteen stories and serials from 1935 to 1941, beginning with “Mavericks of the CCC” (Western Story Magazine, Oct. 5, 1935). The CCC, the Civilian Conservation Corps, are a set of contemporary Westerns in which young men travel to the great outdoors and have cowboy-style adventures, against nature, wild animals, and bad men.
