Casket Crew. The Casket Crew was created by Arch Whitehouse (Todd Bancroft, Buzz Benson, Crash Carringer, Coffin Crew, Griffon, Tug Hardwick, Coffin Kirk) and appeared in twenty stories in Airplane Stories and Wings from 1931 to 1952, beginning with “The Greaseball From Hell” (Airplane Stories, Mar. 1931).

The Casket Crew is the crew and pilots of Allied planes during World Wars One and Two. During the Second World War they are the crew of a Harrow bomber, and the high mortality rate of bomber crews leads to them being dubbed the “casket crew.” They include Andy McGregor, young American Phil Armitage (the pilot), the Irish Sergeant Ryan, and the Englishman Townsend.
