Carrington, Derek. Derek Carrington was created by the Australian author Budleigh Netton and appeared in Guns in the Desert (1937) and Desert Shadow (1939). Derek Carrington is a Legionnaire. Carrington, a Brit, had been a “brilliant Intelligence officer” and Afghani Fighter on the Indian North-West Frontier until he had a romance with a Russian girl. Carrington suspects the girl’s uncle is the international gunrunner known as the Spider. Rather than return in disgrace to London, Carrington enlists in the French Foreign Legion and discovers that the Spider is active among the Bedouin tribes, trying to force the French from North Africa. So Carrington enlists in the “dreaded Espionnage du Nord - the Legion Intelligence Service” - to fight against the Spider and his European allies.
