Carey, Lucius. Lucius Carey was created by Houston Irvine (Kid Buckaroo, Pinto Martin, Red Wolf) and appeared in 120 stories in Wild West Weekly from 1928 to 1936, beginning with “That Shootin’ Fool Deputy” (Wild West Weekly, Oct. 13, 1928). Lucius Carey is a young deputy in a rural county in southwest Texas, and he is seen as a “tenderfoot” by the old-timers in the county. Carey yearns to prove himself, but action is rare in the county. When it does come, however, he’s quick, albeit not particularly accurate with his guns, which earns him the nickname “the Shootin’ Fool.” But when it counts, all his shots go home.
