Captain V. Captain V was created by Ralph Oppenheim (Daniel Craig, Three Mosquitoes) and appeared in seven stories in Battle Birds from 1942 to 1943, beginning with “Victory Wings” (Battle Birds, Aug. 1942).
Before World War Two began Captain V was a minor attaché at the Berlin Embassy. However, the Gestapo decided that he knew too much, so they arranged for a plane crash to kill him. Captain V was declared dead, but he was only mutilated, and American Intelligence surgeons rebuilt his face so that it was handsome but dead and unmoving. He trained and became a top aviator, and returned to warfront duty as the mysterious “Captain V.” He works closely with British Intelligence and forms his own air wing, the V Aces. They have their own underground hangar and their own Bell P-39 Aircobras.
