Cankarlal. Cankarlal was created by the Indian author Tamilvanan and appeared in three novels from 1940 to 1942, beginning with Marma Manithan.

Cankarlal is a private detective, active in New Delhi and environs. He investigates crimes across the strata of Indian society, and is more concerned with achieving justice than in paying attention to concerns of caste. He is serious–almost humorless–and is very conscious of his honor, which is more important to him than Buddhist, Hindu, or Muslim concerns. He is married to Intirā and is given to drinking tea in the course of his investigations.
