Calvin, Susan. Susan Calvin was created by Isaac Asimov (Mike Donovan, Foundation, Half-Breeds, Tan Porus) and appeared in ten short stories from 1941 to 1969, beginning with “Liar!” (Astounding, May 1941).

Susan Calvin is the “Chief Robopsychologist” for U.S. Robots, and it is her job to discover why individual robots malfunction or misbehave, and to help resolve situations in which a robot is acting in ways potentially dangerous to humans. Calvin, a highly driven woman, is dour and “robotic” in her dealings with other people and has far more sympathy with robots (“robots are essentially decent”) than with humans. Mike Donovan works for her.
