Burgess, Jim. Jim Burgess was created by W.T. Brannon and appeared in a number of stories in various detective magazines from at least 1939 to 1947, possibly beginning with “80-mph” (Street & Smith’s Detective Story Magazine, Apr 1939). Jim Burgess is a police detective in Clearwater, Indiana. He stands out from most policemen, though, in that, while hard-boiled, he's also exceedingly canny, and while not a genius is quite well-versed in the human encyclopedia.
