Bugge, Kai. Kai Bugge was created by “Bernhard Borge,” the pseudonym of the Norwegian author André Bjerke, and appeared in four novels from 1941 to 1950, beginning with Nattemennesket.

Kai Bugge is a psychoanalyst who solves crimes in Norway. Bugge is heavily influenced by Sigmund Freud and despises “physical evidence.” He finds it much more revealing to look for the answers to mysteries in people’s minds and motivations, their dreams and diaries and conversations. Many of the crimes he solves are apparently occult in nature, but by novel’s end they are always revealed to have a materialist and rational explanation.
