Bryn-Scarlett, John. John Bryn-Scarlett was created by C.J. Cutcliffe Hyne (Mr. Horrocks, Captain Kettle, Commander McTurk) and appeared in “Empire of the World” (London Magazine, May 1909-Apr 1910); the serial was collected as Empire of the World (1910).

John Bryn-Scarlett is a brilliant scientist who has discovered the “New Force,” which turns iron into a gelatinous sludge. But Bryn-Scarlett is hopeless at romance—he is desperately in love with Laura Deeping, who sees him only as a friend—and is penniless and generally hapless. Bryn-Scarlett is also a rabid English patriot with a deep-set hatred for all things German, so when Lady Deeping declares that she intends to marry the German ambassador, and the British government decides to sell a series of new destroyers and cruisers to Germany, Bryn-Scarlett takes matters into his own hands. He uses the New Force to destroy part of the German navy and to stop Lady Deeping from leaving England. He then forces Germany to divide into individual states. Lady Deeping decides she really loves another man, but Bryn-Scarlett realizes he loves an American heiress and marries her.
