Brent, Rufus. Rufus Brent was created by “Peter Britten,” the pseudonym of Herman Landon (Chameleon, Gray Phantom, Picaroon, Godfrey Usher), and appeared in eight stories in Complete Stories in 1930, beginning with “The Gladstone Bag” (Complete Stories, May 15, 1930.
Rufus Brent is “a free-lancing agent rendering confidential services to three American government departments, not to mention occasional commissions from Downing Street and Quai d’Orsay.” He fights foreign spies and the organization of his archenemy, Sam Hexeter, “directing genius of the cleverest gang of smugglers in the world.” Brent has an infectious good humor.
