Brede, Simon. Simon Brade was created by Lady Harriette Russell Campbell and appeared in eight novels from 1936 to 1946, beginning with String Glove Mystery.
Simon Brade is a private detective. His heart is not in crime-solving, however, but in his jade and porcelain collection. But it is the former which allows him to purchase the latter, so he reluctantly detects. Brede’s gimmick is his collection of Chinese ivory cubes on which he writes suspects, motives, evidence, etc, and manipulates until he reaches the correct answer. He operates out of San Francisco (and in at least one case London) and is relatively well-off, with a nice house and a manservant, Perry.
