Botts, Alexander. Alexander Botts was created by William Upson and appeared in ninety-eight stories and seven novels and short story collections from 1927 to 1971, beginning with “I’m a Natural-Born Salesman” (Saturday Evening Post, Apr 16, 1927).

Alexander Botts is a traveling salesman for the Earthworm Tractor Company. He bills himself as “the world’s best natural-born salesman,” and at the end of the day does show a talent for selling Earthworm tractors to a variety of customers under a variety of conditions. And he does work himself up from a new and often-fired hire to General Manager. But very often he gets into a huge amount of trouble through his own shortsightedness and foolishness as well as other people’s, and he is often fired (and reluctantly rehired) by his manager, Mr. Henderson, who has little patience for Botts’ foolishness.
