Bootle, Swap. Swap Bootle was created by Syl MacDowell (Biff Quade, Blue Steele) and appeared in seventy-three stories in Thrilling Western from 1939 to 1952, beginning with “Won With the Wind” (Thrilling Western, Sept. 1939).

“Swap” Bootle and “Whopper” Whaley are wandering cowpunchers who “discovered that it was possible to live without working if they moved fast and often enough.” Swap is “a short, shiny-faced misfit with a bulging shirtfront and innocent blue eyes that hid his occasional shrewdness.” Whopper is “a lean, long-faced, sad-eyed specimen with a loose tongue and even looser conscience.”
