Black Bill (I). Black Bill (I) was created by Jack Laird and Elliot W. Michener and appeared in eight stories in West from 1929 to 1935, beginning with “Black Bill Turns Sheriff” (West, May 15, 1929). Black Bill (I) is a rascally owlhoot turned sheriff in these humorous cowboy tales. Bill is active from the western frontier to Chicago to Boulder, Colorado, and is a capable shootist despite starring in comedy cowboy stories.
