The Black Bat (I). The Black Bat (I) was created by "Murray Leinster," the pseudonym of William Fitzgerald Jenkins (Burl, Malay Collins, Preston, Kim Rendell), and appeared in six stories in Black Bat Detective Mysteries from 1933 to 1934, beginning with “The Body in the Taxi” (Black Bat Detective Mysteries, Oct. 1933).

The Black Bat (I) is a private detective who occasionally helps the police on pressing cases. The Bat is continually in search of an unnamed person, and it is never explained why the Bat took the name “the Black Bat” or what his real name is.
