Black, Superintendent. Superintendent Black was created by John Newton Chance (Sexton Blake, John Newton Chance, Evelyn DeHavilland, Red Sword) and appeared in four novels from 1935 to 1945, beginning with Wheels in the Forest.
Superintendent Black is an English policeman, “forty, with thin, disbelieving features and a sparkling, incredulous look in his eye.” His approach to crime solving is to “disbelieve as much as possible.” He usually assists Evelyn Dehavilland on cases, although in one novel he is on his own.
