Black Spider. The Black Spider was created by the Australian author Carlton Dawe (Detective Colonel Leathermouth) and appeared in the novel The Black Spider (1911); the novel was filmed in 1920.

The Black Spider is a Lupin modeled on A.J. Raffles. The Vicomte de Beauvais is a Fop nobleman who is engaged to the lovely Angela Carfour. Unfortunately, Carfour is in love with another man, the Black Spider, a gentleman thief who is victimizing the millionaires of Monte Carlo. Carfour steals her aunt’s jewels, as a prank and as a way to attract the Black Spider’s attentions. Inevitably the Black Spider is revealed to be the Vicomte, and he and Carfour live happily ever after.
