Bernardo the Great. Bernardo the Great was created by Robert Shannon and appeared in “In the Toils” (Munsey’s, Aug. 1921) and “Parlor Magic” (Munsey’s, Dec. 1921).
“Bernardo the Great, Prince of Mystery and Master of Magic,” is an “itinerant hypnotist and prestidigitator.” He uses his wisdom and knowledge to make lives better in the small towns he travels through, and if that requires lying to and manipulating people, so be it. When deep in thought he unconsciously blows perfect smoke rings and palms cards. He is a “long-haired, dark-eyed, lean-featured...gentleman who looks like Lincoln and wears a Prince Albert coat.”
