Benson, George. George Benson was created by “Kobold Knight,” the pseudonym of Eric Cawood Gwyddyn Giddy, and appeared in seven stories in Windsor Magazine from 1930 to 1932, beginning with “My Lady of the Road” (Windsor Magazine, June 1930).
The pseudonymical “George Benson” works on the Continent for the British Secret Service, acquiring the layouts of Turkish forts, making sure that the plans to a new kind of recoilless rifle are turned over to British Army manufacturers, stealing the only copy of a secret treaty between France and Austria, and so on. Benson is relatively resourceful and skilled, but too easily gulled and (despite his author’s best attempts) not overly intelligent, and he frequently gets in trouble, especially when he is opposed by the beautiful freelance spy Belle Louise Malpy. She is usually more than a match for Benson, who often requires the help of his fellow agent “Blue Peter” to escape from La Belle Malpy’s dainty clutches.
