Benson, Bobby. Bobby Benson was created by Herbert C. Rice and appeared in the radio program Bobby Benson and the B-Bar-B Riders (1932-1936, 1949-1955).
Twelve-year-old Bobby Benson inherits the B-Bar-B Ranch in south Texas, in the Big Bend country, when his parents die. He discovers any number of bad guys who need capturing, from shootists to rustlers to Mexican bandits to stagecoach hijackers. In one episode Benson even goes to China. In its second incarnation the radio show’s episodes verged on the fantastic, with Benson’s enemies including “the Headless Horsemen” and “Jebaco,” a native demon. Benson, who comes to be known as “the Cowboy Kid,” is assisted by Ted Mason, the foreman of the B-Bar-B, and by Tall Tale Teller Windy Wales.
