Benoît, Commandant. Commandant Benoît was created by “Charles Robert-Dumas,” the pseudonym of the French author Charles Darelles (Mâh le Sinistre), and appeared in seven novels from 1934 to 1939, beginning with “Ceux du S.R.”: Deuxième Bureau; Benoît also appeared in four American and French film and film serials based on Robert-Dumas’ novels.

During World War One Captain Gil Benoît is an agent for the French Deuxième Bureau, working with the American Expeditionary Force. He carries out a prolonged duel with the German adventuress and spy Erna Flieder, who becomes his Loving Enemy and eventually dies saving him. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s he is active for the Deuxième Bureau, rising to the rank of Commandant and continuing to fight the Germans and their female agents, notably the beautiful Satanas.
