Bengali Inspector. The Bengali Inspector was created by the Indian author Priyanath Mukhopadhyay and appeared in 206 stories from 1892 to at least 1915, beginning with “Banomali Daser Hatya” (Darogar Daftar, April, 1892).
The Bengali Inspector is the chief native police officer (the “inspector-in-charge”) under the British in Calcutta and investigates crimes among the Bengali in the city. Most of the Bengali who the Inspector investigates turn out to be bad sorts, while the Inspector’s English superior, like most (but not all) of the English in the Bengali Inspector stories, is a smart, wise being.
