Bell, Jeremy. Jeremy Bell was created by Max Pemberton (Captain Black, Jack Ward, Zoë) and appeared in six short stories which were collected in A Bagman in Jewels (1919).

Jeremy Bell is a wealthy English dealer in precious stones who is “well known to the diamond dealers of the Continent.” Despite his wealth he lives humbly and wears a shabby alpaca coat and an “abominable bowler.” He is unsentimental about most things, but loves stones. He has a “nimble mind,” and has a certain something which prompts people to talk to him and tell him their problems, which inevitably leads him into gem-related mysteries and events.
