Beef, William. William Beef was created by Leo Bruce and appeared in eight novels from 1936 to 1952, beginning with Case for Three Detectives.
Sergeant William Beef is a What’s All This, Then. He is a village policeman and later a private detective who lacks intellect and imagination but compensates with willpower, doggedness, and fearlessness. His plodding approach solves crimes which more intelligent policemen and investigators, including analogues of Peter Wimsey, Hercule Poirot, and Father Brown, are unable to solve.
