Bean, Roy. Roy Bean (c. 1825-1903) was the famous “Hangin’ Judge,” a saloon keeper in remote west Texas who acted as the Justice of the Peace for Pecos County and called himself “the Law west of the Pecos.” Beginning in 1939 Bean was the hero of a series of stories in Wild West Weekly written by “Dean McKinley,” a Street & Smith house name used in this case by Allan Bosworth (Blackstone Bangs, Shorty Masters); the first Judge Roy Bean story was “Roy Bean's Gun Truce” (Wild West Weekly, Sept 16, 1939). The fictional Judge Roy Bean is often involved with Blackstone Bangs and is crotchety but less vile than the real Bean.
