Aviraneta, Eugenio. Eugenio Aviraneta (1792-1872) was a guerrilla fighter in the Spanish War of Independence (1808-1812) and a Liberal politician and ranking Mason afterward. He appeared in twenty-two novels between 1911 and 1935, beginning with El Aprendiz de Conspirador. Written by Pío Baroja (Captain Chimista, Silvestre Paradox, Martín Zalacaín), the fictional Aviraneta is a Nietzschean man of action and independence searching for truth against the efforts of corrupt men.
